Style Spotlight: Shoshanna!

/ Tuesday, May 31, 2011 /
A long-time favorite of the Cotton Mill, Shoshanna is more popular than ever, with flattering silhouettes and feminine details on every dress.  A few Cotton Mill employees (including moi) are even veteran Shoshanna interns and got a firsthand look at how they operate!  Think yards and yards of fun fabrics, photo shoots, look books, runs to the sample factory, and a lot of Midtown Manhattan commuting. The end result is a plethora of fabulous looks, suitable for summer cocktail parties, attending weddings, going out to dinner, or just to feel gorgeous!

Here are a few looks from our latest shipments:

Meet the Stylists: Brittany

/ Sunday, May 22, 2011 /
Welcome to the first post in a series I'm calling "Meet the Stylists" (because, really, that's what we are! Come by for your own personal styling session at the Cotton Mill, Monday-Saturday).  First up, Miss Brittany!

What is your fashion background?
I have a degree from the University of Alabama in apparel and textiles, with a concentration in design.

Who is one of your style icons?
Reese Witherspoon! She has classic southern style with a modern take.
What is a trend you loved this season?
High-low tops (tops that are shorter in the front and longer in the back) and maxi dresses. They are so flowy and perfect for hot summer weather.
How do you describe your personal style?
I tend to stick to the classics and add in fun twists and trend pieces every season. That way, when something goes out of style, you don't have to start all over again!
What blogs or magazines do you read to keep you inspired?
I love cupcakes and cashmere, InStyle, and Aman Stovall, which is co-written by a girl who graduated from Alabama with me!

                                                           Brittany's Top 5 Picks

"These pieces by Milly are a fun vintage-inspired pairing."
"I love the beading on this T Bags Los Angeles maxi dress."
"These Diane Von Furstenburg tan wedges are shockingly comfortable for their height and would look great with a sundress or a wide legged trouser jean!"

The Melvin Case Christmas for Kids Foundation

/ Monday, May 16, 2011 /
If you have been inside the Cotton Mill, you have probably noticed the fabulous artwork adorning the walls. What you might not know is that they are for sale and 100% of the proceeds go to an amazing charity foundation, the Melvin Case Christmas for Kids Foundation! Martha Case Nemer, co-owner of the Cotton Mill with her husband, Bob, started the foundation in 2000 in honor of her late brother Melvin as way to provide toys to underprivileged children at Christmas.  In addition, the foundation has helped support two need-based nursing scholarships a year at Tennessee Technological University, School of Nursing, since 2005!  All funding comes from the proceeds of Martha's paintings, exclusively at the Cotton Mill.

prices for the paintings above available upon request
Predominantly self-taught, Martha cites her greatest inspirations as "the fabulous Rosie Paschall and Joseph Sulkowski".  Her subject matter runs the spectrum from elegant still lives to more whimsical subjects, such as delectable-looking cupcakes, portraits of imagined characters, and quirky animals.    Depending on time frame and subject, she also does work on commission. Pricing falls into two categories, "Just for Fun" (acrylics and unframed works) range from $50-$150, with "The Serious Stuff" (oil paintings and framed works) ranging from $350-$2000.
